Chapter 01
Metal and asphalt ask different things of the deck
Asphalt shingle is nailed down in overlapping courses straight to the deck, and it is forgiving of a deck that is not perfectly true. Metal, whether it is standing-seam panel or a shingle-profile metal roof, wants a straighter surface underneath it and fasteners set up for the way a metal panel moves as the temperature swings through an Oklahoma summer and winter.
On a tear-off, this is where the two roofs start looking like genuinely different jobs rather than a simple material swap. The underlayment, the fastening pattern and the flashing at every pipe and vent all change depending on what is going back on top.

Composite and wood roofs want their own handling
Composite and wood roofs are still common around Tahlequah, and neither one gets treated like an odd version of asphalt shingle. Composite shake is built to read like real cedar from the street while going down with its own fastening and spacing, and genuine wood shake or shingle needs the gaps between pieces respected so the roof can breathe and shed water the way it is meant to.
Residential roofing on any of these systems starts the same way as a shingle tear-off: the decking gets checked before anything new goes down, since rot at the eave or old felt underneath does not care what material is going back on top of it.

Six shingle lines carried, and matching the line to the roof
For asphalt work, Calvin & Son carries Malarkey, GAF, IKO, Certainteed, Owens Corning and Tamco. Carrying six lines instead of one means the choice can come down to what suits the house and the budget, rather than being handed whatever happens to be on the truck.
If a particular line is already in mind, saying so early helps. The owner has gone out of his way before to track down a shingle a customer wanted that was not easy to find, rather than talking them into whatever was easiest to get.
